Project Intro
This cover shoot for AURUM Magbook was photographed in one of Vienna’s most fascinating 19th-century inner-city mansions, a place that has stood empty for the past 40 years. Dust on the walls, traces of time everywhere and a sense of old stories still lingering in the space. It was the perfect setting for a darker visual narrative. The goal of this setup was to create ultra-moody images that reflect the atmosphere and soul of the mansion, while telling a story within the story of the house itself. Let’s jump in.

- This lighting setup is naturally influenced by the location you are shooting in. Still, the overall approach can be applied in almost any space when the goal is to create strong contrast and a harder, more dramatic look.
- To achieve this effect, work with smaller light sources such as the Profoto Magnum Reflector or a similar light shaper, as they will give you a harder and more direct quality of light
- One of the strengths of working in locations like this is that the surroundings themselves can help shape the light. Elements such as broken windows, doorways, corridors, or controlled light spill can be used to build a darker, more uncertain atmosphere that gives the location real presence.
- Set your lights to power 5.0 as a starting point, then fine tune the output based on distance, exposure, and the level of contrast you want to achieve.

STEP 2
- Depending on the location, there may be daylight spilling into the space. For this shoot, we decided not to mix daylight with artificial light, but instead to fully underexpose the scene and light it exclusively with flash
- Camera settings: 1/160 s, f/8, ISO 320, depending on your location and the result you want to achieve.
