Project Intro
Our aim with this setup is to evoke a surreal vibe by using a softbox at a very low angle as our key light—flipping the classic light and shadow relationship on its head. Let’s get started!
STEP 1
- Mount a Profoto 2×3 Softbox at a very low angle. Although this light is typically used as a fill to even out shadows, here it serves as your key light to sculpt the model’s face and create a surreal mood.
- Start at Power 6.0 and tweak to taste.
STEP 2
- Add a kicker on the far right: mount a Profoto ProHead + Zoom Reflector to graze the model’s body, shoulders, and hair—this separates her from the backdrop.
- Flag off spill with two black polyboards.
- Start at Power 4.0 and tweak to taste.
STEP 3
- Mount a 6×6 frame at camera-left and stretch 6×6 Grid Cloth fabric over it.
- Position a Profoto Deep White Umbrella on a ProHead directly behind the frame to serve as a broad fill light.
- Flag both sides with black polyboards to block any unwanted spill.
- Start at Power 5.0 and adjust until the set has just a touch of fill.
- Camera settings 1/160, f8, ISO 125.

Project Intro
Our aim with this setup is to evoke a surreal vibe by using a softbox at a very low angle as our key light—flipping the classic light and shadow relationship on its head. Let’s get started!
BEFORE AND AFTER
