CRAFTING THE LIGHT
BEFORE AND AFTER
Transformation made visible.
TOOLS
Equipment List
China Silk
A lightweight, finely woven silk fabric available in white or black versions, traditionally used on frames for light control.
Why it’s used: The white version diffuses light to create a soft, flattering effect, while the black version subtly reduces light without changing its quality — both offering a smooth, natural look for high-end shoots.

Shiny Mirror Board
A rigid, highly reflective board with a mirror-like surface, used to bounce strong, focused light. Often made from acrylic or metal for durability.
Why it’s used: Redirects light with maximum intensity for sharp highlights, dramatic effects, or to simulate direct sunlight in controlled studio or location setups.

Project Intro
The goal of this setup is to craft a playful, on-location look that flatters bold makeup. The original image was shot in open-field, direct sunlight; in the 3D render, the hard source represents that sun.

- Rig a 12×12 frame with ¼ Silk between the sun and the model to soften the light while preserving the golden glow.
- Aim for a soft, airy feel on skin without losing the sun’s warmth.
- The tiny shimmering “flecks” come from styling: a glittery top reflecting sunlight back onto the skin (not a lighting artifact).

STEP 2
- Camera settings: 1/1250 s, f/8, ISO 160. Shoot near sunrise/sunset and adjust to conditions.
