Project Intro
The goal of this setup is to deliver a dark, contrast-driven vibe with an otherworldly edge - built for editorials and campaigns. Let’s dive in!
STEP 1
- Mount a Profoto 1x3" strip softbox centered at the back, aimed at the backdrop to create a top-down gradient that fades toward the floor.
- Place a Lee Blue filter foil in front of the ProHead to bring in some blue`ish tint
- Place two white polyboards on either side of the backdrop to bounce subtle fill into the set.
- Start at power 3.0 and adjust to taste.
STEP 2
- Mount a Profoto 2″ Octabox with grid almost directly above the model; tilt slightly so it doesn’t fully hit the top of the models head, but also the shoulders
- Add a Lee Blue filter foil in front of the ProHead to add some more blue.
- Start at power 3.0 and adjust to your needs.
- Add two black polyboards left and right of the model to boost contrast and prevent spill.
- Add a black polyboard overhead across the set to separate front and back light; rig it on two C-stands with forks/clamps.
STEP 3
- Mount a Profoto ProHead with Magnum Reflector as the key, aimed only at the model’s face.
- Angle it slightly higher so the beam doesn’t hit the floor.
- Place a black floppy flag in front to block spill—keep the light off the background and on the face.
- Start at power 5.0 and adjust to preference.
STEP 4
- Use a small Lightbride mirror board (or similar) on the model’s left to add playful light effects and a touch of fill.
- Adjust angle, tilt, and distance to control the hotspot’s size, shape, and intensity.
- Keep it subtle to preserve the setup’s high-contrast mood.
- Camera settings: 1/125 s, f/7.1, ISO 200.
